Mathur Aqueduct Hanging Trough - Kanyakumari

Mathur Aqueduct is One of the Longest and Highest Aqueducts in South Asia. It is about 60 km from the popular tourist town of Kanyakumari and about 60 km from the city Trivandrum. We visited here during bike ride from Trivandrum to Kanyakumari.

It was constructed in 1966 as a drought relief measure across the river Pahrali originates in the Mahendragiri Hills. Mathur Aqueduct is supported by 28 huge pillars with a length of 1240 ft (378m) and maximum height of 115 ft (35m).

Mathoor Aqueduct carries water for irrigation from one hill to another for a distance of close to one kilometer. In recent times, it has become a popular tourist attraction in Kanyakumari District. From the center of the aqueduct, one can see a vast expanse of greenery, with rolling hills of the Western Ghats in the background, and the meandering Pahrali river flowing below.
